Customer Rating: Summary: beautifully illustrated, well-told Comment: This is a great little book-the mythology is lavishly illustrated, and well recounted. A little too verbose to read aloud, and somewhat violent-though this is true to the mythology. I bought this copy for my six-year old and her attention definitely wandered. More suitable for for an 8-10 year old with good reading skills. I hope my little one will grow into it!
Customer Rating: Summary: "Young children"? Not so much. Comment: These are good for children maybe 7 or 8 years of age up through maybe 10. They use words that are too foreign, and the stories seem a little disjointed to a reader unfamiliar with figuring out WHY things in the story are happening.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Introduction To Mythology Comment: We bought this book to introduce our 5-year old son to Greek mythology while on a cruise around the Greek islands. He adored these stories and found them entertaining as well as memorable. They also enhanced our trip by bringing ancient Greece to life. They are perfect for the 4-9 year old (maybe even older). Not too scary or adult but they retain the spirit of the original tales. Beautiful illustrations (though I also agree we would have liked a few more).
Customer Rating: Summary: nice but not enough illustrations Comment: This is a well written book with a good selection of myths. My only complaint is that there is not artwork on every page. So you could have a 2 page spread with nothing but print (with a decorative border). Although this is fine for older readers, I think that young children like to see pictures, at least 1 picture for each 2 page spread. The myths are so interesting that one would think there would be ample artistic opportunities - even a small picture would help. I'm sure that one might argue that the children should use their imagination instead - but if you are going to specify in the title "... for young children".. then I think you should go ahead and make it a true picture book. The artwork on the cover is gorgeous - I would have like to have seen more like it inside.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great book. Comment: We've had this about a week and my boy (he's 5) takes it everywhere with him, to read in case there's a slow moment in whatever it is we are doing. I can't tell you what makes it appealing for him, but he understands and retains what he has read, and it carries him way beyond his customary attention span.
